About Us

Brief Introduction

Rehabilitation, Empowerment And Development-Nepal (READ-Nepal) is a newly established non-governmental, non-profit and humanitarian organization with the sole motto of rendering advocacy services to leprosy affected other vulnerable groups in our society. It is registered with the Government of Nepal (Kathmandu District Administration Office Reg. No.677-061-062) and affiliated with social Welfare Council (SWC No. 18047). It is emerged with the initiative of leprosy stricken persons in order to serve in the field of health and sanitation of leprosy suffers and other marginal persons such as care and prevention and socio-economic empowerment) advocacy, counseling rights and awareness..

Despite of lot of efforts fro governmental, international and civil organizations for control and prevention of leprosy in Nepal, the present situation of leprosy in Nepal still remains growing. Leprosy suffers are facing social stigmatization, deformity and economic isolation. READ-Nepal is established to relieve the pains of such persons through various related activities (like providing awareness programmed through Fm, free clinic services for needy people, would care ward, skilled dev. Training for vulnerable groups. READ-Nepal is providing preventions of Impairment of Disability (POID) service to the leprosy-affected people (LAP) from its own source and small donations provided by friends and well-wishers from the beginning. (The POID activity is purely focused to serve the LAPs. Activities involve are soaking the anesthetic limbs, scraping the death cells, dressing including VMT test and providing the knowledge with how to protect affected limbs etc.)

Brief Background

Leprosy, caused by Lepprae bacillus, is a chronic infectious disease mostly affecting peripheral nerves, skins and eyes. Nepal is one amongst the leprosy endemic countries with leprosy prevalence rate of 1.65 per 10,000 populations. Nepal still has to take concrete and aggressive steps to bring down this rate 1 or less to be recognized as leprosy free country.

It needs proper self care of affected limbs to prevent from impairment and further damage which is more likely due to losing or sensation. There is wide spread social stigma towards this disease leading to isolation of Leprosy affected Persons (LAPs) from familial, social and economic affairs. It is all due to lack of proper knowledge, awareness and education with LAPs as well as society.

Addressing the problem with the motive of providing medical support and awareness through information dissemination, READ-Nepal organized one-day camp at Bugmati of Lalitpur with the assistance of World Vision International in coordination with local stakeholders and volunteers on the occasion of 54th World Leprosy day on 28 January 2007.
